The sun is shining, and there’s nothing better than getting out to bask in the heat. But while you’re enjoying the sunshine, it’s important to make sure that you’re prioritizing protecting your skin and body. Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and non-melanoma skin cancer is unfortunately one of the most common cancers. Overexposure to the sun, particularly without skin protection, will increase your risk of developing skin cancer. But the good news is that avoiding it is within your control. We’ve put together a list of healthy summer skin tips so you can enjoy the sun without worrying about any of its dangerous effects.
#1. Follow the 15 Rule:
It goes without saying that you shouldn’t go outside in the heat without applying sunscreen to all exposed areas of your skin. In fact, even if the day seems cloudy, if the sun is shining at all, protecting your skin should still be a top priority. After all, the last thing that you want is to suffer with nasty sunburn. Apply sunscreen at least fifteen minutes before you go outside; this will give your skin the chance to soak it up and enjoy the best protection. You should use at least SPF 15, and take some out with you so that you can reapply it often.
#2. Choose Your Sunscreen Wisely:
Sunscreen is a summertime essential, but bear in mind that not all options are created equally. To give your skin the best chance at protection, invest in a good, paraben free sunscreen that’s designed for your skin type. Consider whether you have sensitive, dry, oily or normal skin and pick a sunscreen that will work best for you. And don’t forget about the activities that you’ll be doing, too. For example, if you enjoy swimming a lot or take part in water-sports, a waterproof sunscreen is a must.
#3. Avoid the Heat of the Day:
Whenever you can, try and find a shady area to chill in when the sun is at its strongest. This tends to be during the hours of 10am-4pm, so plan your days accordingly. The sun is usually hottest at around mid-day, so it’s a wise idea to plan to be indoors at that time. If you can’t avoid being outside, make sure that you’ve applied an adequate amount of sunscreen and have plenty with you for topping up.
#4. Wear Protective Accessories:
Along with sunscreen, accessorizing with a wide-brimmed hat, long, cotton sleeves or trousers can help to keep your skin covered up and protect you from harmful UV rays. An umbrella or parasol is also a great idea for on-demand shade when you need it. And don’t forget to wear sunglasses to protect your sensitive eyelids.
#5. Stay Hydrated:
Last but not least, don’t forget to give your skin the power it needs to stay protected from the inside. Drinking plenty of water will ensure that you avoid getting dehydrated and keep your skin in better health. Even when you’re not directly in the sun, keep a bottle of water with you to nourish your skin and body.
